New Delhi: The ministry of mines released guidelines for setting up Centres of Excellence (CoEs) under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), aimed at strengthening research and technology development in critical minerals essential for clean energy, mobility, electronics, defence and space sectors.According to the guidelines, CoEs will focus on the identification, development and implementation of extraction and beneficiation technologies for critical minerals sourced from primary and secondary resources. The initiative will support research activities that progress technologies to Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 7 and 8, covering pilot plant and pre-commercial demonstration stages. The centres will operate through a consortium model on a Hub and Spoke basis, with each CoE led by a hub institute. The consortium must include at least two industry partners and two academic or R&D institutions. The CoEs are expected to promote interdisciplinary collaboration to develop competencies in the critical minerals sector.Under this initiative, reputed academic and R&D institutions meeting the eligibility criteria will be recognised as CoEs through a formal selection process. The Ministry of Mines will soon invite proposals from such institutions to participate in the scheme.
